General Information

IIT Bombay runs language courses for the campus community, consisting of students, faculty, staff and occasionally family members of institute employees. So far, there are five language courses being offered: French, German, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), and Sanskrit. At this point, Japanese and Sanskrit language courses offered in last semester.

The languages Courses are 100 hours course per batch. The batches are categories as Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced Batch.

Beginners Batch

The participant will learn basic oral and written expressions, phonetics, grammar and vocabulary. On the successful completion of its each module, certificates will be issued.

Intermediate Batch

For the participant who have already completed 100 hours of beginner course. On the successful completion of its each module, certificates will be issued.

These batches are divided into Two Modules:

Language Module Duration Classes
Module - I 50 hours Autumn Semester (25 classes)
Module - II 50 hours Spring Semester (25 classes)

Classes held twice a week for 2 hours a day in the evening slots (during 5:00-9:00 pm).

General Guidelines:

The classes being conducted in assigned lecture hall. Tests will be conducted in every module. Attendance for all the tests is compulsory. A minimum of 50% is required in the tests for issuance of certificates. Issuing the certificate at the end of the year subject to:

  1. A minimum of 60% test score
  2. 50% attendance i.e. min. 50 hours

Detailed information about class schedule is disseminated to enrolled students and staff members of the institute via an email by International Relations office. The family members of staff can enroll who must be aged 18 years or over.
